There is in fact no such thing as art for art's sake, art that stands above classes, art that is detached from or independent of politics. Proletarian literature and art are part of the whole proletarian revolutionary cause (Mao Zedong)

The Chinese Communist Revolution started from 1945 and by October 1, 1949 the People's Republic of Chinawas established. A key component of revolutionary leader Mao Zedong’s strategy was the creation of the Little Red Book whose purpose was to make Zedong’s dialectical thoughts accessible for anyone to read, memorize, or set to music. This book became a key part of the reading for anti-colonial audiences worldwide.

The collective Chto Delat (What is to be done?) was founded in early 2003 by artists, critics, philosophers and writers from Russia with the goal of merging political theory, art and activism.

Their artistic activity utilizes a range of media — from education practicies to film, theater, radio programs, publishing newspapers, murals, seminars and public campaigns.
