"The question today is not democracy or dictatorship. The question that history has put on the agenda reads: bourgeois democracy or socialist democracy" (Rosa Luxemburg)

Inspired by the electrifying impact of the Bolshevik Revolution and the experience of the horrors of the First World War, the German working class rose up. Initially a sailor mutiny, the revolution spread to the home army, the urban workforce and part of the Bavarian rural population. Two leaders of the German working class uprising, Rosa Luxembourg and Karl Liebknecht, were murdered in the streets of Berlin in 1919.
