The Drake

Jason Peters - New York, USA

Drake Hotel invites guests to explore a series of monumental light sculptures of epic coloured rings.

Here, New York artist Jason Peters, creates profound experiences with the most mundane materials – in this case using hundreds of two gallon plastic buckets, lit from within, it is an environment guests can walk through and explore. Through this piece it is the artist’s wish that ‘By being able to wander through the art work you create open and intimate spaces for yourself’.

Artist Statement: In my work I attempt to trigger and explore both intellectual and emotional reactions to the ways in which objects interact with their surrounding environment. I try to set up a situation where nothing is as it seems, and our notions of reality are exposed as mere assumptions, based on perceptions and experiences that may or may not bear any actual relationship to the way the world works. Instead, I invite the viewer to suspend past experience and enter into a world where the mind is allowed free rein, even as the body remains constrained by the laws of gravity and the sometimes perceptually imperceptible limits that contain it.

New York artist, Jason Peters’ large sculptures are comprised of discarded items in repeating designs - societal cast offs that are made beautiful through form and light. Once removed from their traditional context, the objects' interaction with the environment becomes unpredictable and often inspiring, triggering intellectual and emotional reactions to the ways in which objects interact with their surrounding environment. Peters’ site specific installations have been shown throughout the US, as well as Germany, Greece and Italy.
