Leaving Still began as an exploration of the history of us - from the microcosm of artist Michelle Polak’s family history to the macrocosm of the Big Bang.

In 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' Bill Bryson explains, "We have a universe. It is a place of the most wondrous and gratifying possibility, and beautiful, too. And it was all done in about the time it takes to make a sandwich."

Every hour, this intimate performance and installation will be punctuated by making a sandwich for a viewer-participant. In about the time it took to create the universe, the audience will have the chance to ask Michelle any intimate questions they want, and she will answer honestly, revealing to them the story and universe that is her.

Leaving Still is an experiment, set in a freight elevator, to connect and to create something from nothing.

Michelle Polak is an award-winning interdisciplinary performer. Her practice integrates the body, intimacy and human interaction as artistic mediums.
